Abstract
Gurdrun and Ursula, who also appeared in The Rainbow, live in a Midlands colliery town. Ursula falls in love with Birkin (a self-portrait of Lawrence), and Gurdun has a tragic and demoniac affair with Gerald, the son of the local colliery owner. These four, and such brilliantly drawn minor characters as Hermione the intellectual hostess and Loerke the sculptor, clash in thought, passion and belief. And as the tale moves towards a dramatic conclusion in the Alps, the reader is gripped by deeply held convictions about love and moderns society.
