Description
The WATER & ENVIRONMENT GLOSSARY is embracing the various fields of study of the ENGEES engineering school for ' water and environment, in Strasbourg, France. This ranges from sciences and techniques for water and environment, engineering methods and tools, organization of university studies and industrial placements, to an approach of career opportunities for young graduates, or the professional world familiar to any engineer for water and environment.
The corpus of this glossary mostly comprises specific technical terms in single words or expressions. In spite of that, some self-evident entries have not been created (water = eau), even if fundamental. Nevertheless, most of these words still appear in complex expressions (wastewater = eaux usées).
In order to avoid coming up with too thick and awkward a volume, lacking in general interest, it has been necessary to set an upper limit for the degree of specialization. It certainly cannot be set strictly, particularly from one topic to another, but this limit results in a basic technical corpus for an engineer for water and environment. The objective is to facilitate the communication between engineers speaking different languages and working in different fields. This glossary should facilitate the use of foreign literature, the writing of articles, summaries, CVs and letters of motivation, or executive summaries of projects.
The GLOSSARY will find its essential place between, on the one hand, general dictionaries, which may not meet technical expectations of engineers, and on the other hand, highly specialized and detailed glossaries already existing in many very narrow fields with overabundant vocabulary.
This document should first help students, researchers and professors at the ENGEES school, but also their current contacts: visiting lecturers, placement supervisors, employers, professionals, etc.
If this document is primarily meant for reference, it mav also be of use as a teaching material for foreign language professors teaching one of the languages of the GLOSSARY to water & environment students at ENGEES or abroad.
In the present edition, some areas have scarcely been covered, such as parasitology or biotechnology. In addition, much work still lies ahead in order to improve its quality (nuances, uses) and the choice of new entries or topics. The number of entries and the number of languages both show on the front cover, so that subsequent editions can be identified. 1300 x 3 is a trilingual edition providing 1300 entries.
Any suggestions for correction or addition of entries would be most welcome. The last page of this document can be used for exchanging information. Thanks in advance !
