Abstract
Program 1 Seeing is Believing
Stephen Hawking begins our journey through cosmology, tracing the history of astronomical theories and technology. In this episode, the Earth shifts from Ptolemy's centre of the universe to what Professor Hawking describes as an orbit around an average-sized sun - one among millions of stars.

Program 2 The Big Bang:
For thousands of years, people have wondered about the universe. Did it stretch out forever or was there a limit? And where did it come from? Professor Stephen Hawking examines conflicting arguments about the origin of the universe and traces his own role in The Big Bang theory.
Description
Probably the best-known scientist since Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking works on the very edge of theoretical physics, dealing with the basic elements of the universe. In each episode of this series, originally produced for PBS, viewers journey into Hawking's world, a world where theory and conjecture are the currency. Each episode presents heavy science with the down-to-earth style that made Hawking's book A Brief History of Time a New York Times best-seller. This first tape contains two episodes of the series, "Seeing Is Believing" and "In the Beginning." In the first, viewers examine the history of the science of cosmology. In the second, questions of the universe's origins are examined and contrasted. In both, the theories that laid the groundwork for today's science and the men who came up with them are investigated and lauded. Rob Ferrier, Rovi
